History of Chengde
Chengde, originally called Rehe was once the summer resort capital of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).It holds rich culture related to this history as well as many historic relics dating as far back as the Neolithic Age in this city. Ethnic groups such as Xiongnu, Xianbei, Qidan, Nvzhen, and Mongolian once led a nomadic existence in this region from the Qin (221BC-206) to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).
In 1703, Chengde was chosen by the Kangxi Emperor as the location for his summer residence. Constructed throughout the eighteenth century, the Mountain Resort was used by both the Yongzheng and Qianlong emperors. Since the seat of government followed the emperor, Chengde was a political center of the Chinese empire during these times.
Under the Republic of China, Chengde was the capital of Rehe province. From 1933 to 1945 the city was under Japanese control as a part of the Manchurian puppet state known as Manchukuo. After World War II the Kuomintang regained jurisdiction. In 1948, the People's Liberation Army took control of Chengde. It would remain a part of Rehe until 1955, when the province was abolished, and the city was incorporated into Hebei Province.

How to get to Chngde?

By Air: There is a small airport in the southern part of Chengdu City, where irregular charter flights are available between Beijing and Chengde.As Chengde is so close to Beijing, about 180 kilometers (112 miles) from Beijing Capital International Airport, there is only a small-scale airport in the south of the city. Only non-scheduled chartered flights operate between these two cities from time to time. Therefore, you can take the long-distance bus from Chengde bus station to Beijing and take a plane from Beijing Capital International Airport in accordance with your needs. The journey will take between 3 and 4hours to Beijing and the ticket price is CNY 50.
By Train: Local railway station lies on Wulie Lu in the southeast of the city. Routes include Jingcheng (rails liking Beijing), Shicheng (rails liking Shijiazhuang), Shencheng (rails liking Shenyang) and Chenglong (rails liking Longhua County) railways convergeon this station. There are now trains to Beijing, Tianjin, Shijiazhuang, Shenyang, Baotou, Dandong, Ulanhot, Chifeng, Tongliao and Jinzhou available from the railway station.
Tourists can take trains from Beijing to destinations all over China with tickets purchased from Chengde Railway Station as it has linked to the ticket network for the main stations in Beijing.The trains from Beijing to Chengde takes about 5-7 hours on the way. Ticket fare is around CNY130 for a soft sleeper, CNY90 for a hard sleeper, and CNY40 for a hard seat.

By Bus: The highway links of the city are very convenient and include the Jingcheng Tourist Highway, Weicheng Highway (Weichang County to Chengde) and three national highways linking the city with Beijing, Tianjin, Liaoning, and Inner Mongolia, etc. It will take you 3.5 hours to travel from Beijing to the city via the Jingcheng Tourist Highway.
There are three long-distance buses that run to nearby cities such as Beijing,Tianjin, Shijiazhuang, and Zhangjiakou daily from there. Mini buses run every 30 minutes from 06:00 until 16:00 between Chengde Long-distance Bus Station and Beijing Xizhimen Long-distance Station daily.
In addition, regular bus services link every county of the city departing from Western Bus Station and Northern Bus Station daily.
Some destinations from the Western Bus Station: Weichang County, Longhua County, Fengning, Luanping County, depart every 15 minutes.
Destinations from the Northern Bus Station include Pingquan County, Chifeng, Chengde County (Xiabancheng Town), and depart every 15 minutes.
