Jiuquan was one of the four counties in Hexi Corridor in the Han Dynasty. It was a traffic fort on the way to the Western Region, and a place of strategic importance along the Silk Road. Jiuquan is famous for Dunhuang, one of the must-see places when you plan your Silk Road Tours.

History of Jiuquan

Since extremely long ago, this area of Jiuquan had been inhabited by nomads of several ancient ethnic minorities in northwestern China. It was until the early ages of the Western Han Dynasty (206BC-24AD) that vast land west of the Yellow River including Jiuquan was entirely put into the regnal territory. The famous Silk Road stretched through the city and it had been the vital pass linking Central China with Central Asia and Europe.


Geography of Jiuquan

Situated in the northwest of Gansu Province, Jiuquan neighbors Zhangye in the east within the province. It is also bordered by Qinghai Province in the south, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in the west and Inner Mongolia and Mongolia in the north.

Basically, the terrain of Jiuquan slopes from southwest to northeast. Qilian Mountain region is a range of mountains 3000 to 5000 meters high, layer upon layer, and very steep. Shule River basin, situated in the inland and west of Jiuquan, has a typical continental climate. It is about 170 to 1900 meters above sea level. The south mountain region has a cold and semiarid climate and the annual average temperature is 4℃ to 6℃.The Corridor region has a temperate and arid climate and the annual average temperature is 5℃ to 9℃.The overall climate feature is less rainfall, more evaporation. It is one of the areas with the least rainfall in China, and the most evaporation in Gansu Provision. It has long sunshine, a significant temperature difference between day and night, dry and short summers, cold and long winters. In spring, the temperature rises quickly. Anxi, a dry and windy place, has long been known as “World Wind Store"


Top Attractions in Jiuquan

Continuous mountains, the wild Gobi and adjoining basins of Jiuquan constitute the vigorous and unique northwest scenery: white glacier and snow, green plains and oases, and the mirage in the Gobi desert.

Jiuquan3.jpgJiuquan satellite launch center:  Known as Dongfeng Aerospace City (JSLC), it  is located deep in the Badain Jaran Desert, 210km  to the northeast of Jiuquan City. Being one of the emission test bases of scientific satellite, technological experiment satellite and carrier rocket in China, it is not only the oldest and largest integrated launch center for missiles and satellites in China, but also the only launch site for manned space flight.The scenic spots available for domestic tourists are: the Satellite Launch Field, the Command and Control Center, the Long March Rocket Two, the Testing Center, the Exhibition Hall of the History of Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, Cemetery of Martyrs, the Dongfeng Reservoir, the Desert Forest of Populus Euphratica, etc..

Mural in Eastern Jin Tomb: There is a royal tomb of the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317-420) located to the northwest of the city. The entire tomb, 12 meters beneath the earth, was constructed with bricks and divided into two rooms. The former room was paved with colorful murals on the roof and walls, as well as the latter room only has mural in the posterior wall. These murals depict the Chinese ancient legend, labor and life of the people vividly.

The Bell and Drum Tower: Constructed in the Eastern Jin Dynasty, this tower is located in the Shizi Street. The 24-meter's high tower consists of two parts—a brick square base and a three-storied wooden body. On the each side of the base, there is an arch with its own inscription in turn—'East to Mt. Huashan', 'West to Hami', 'South to Qilian Mountain' and 'North to Desert'.

Wine Spring of the Western Han Dynasty: Covering an area of 270,000 square meters, the Wine Spring of the Western Han Dynasty is a well-preserved classic garden with a history of over 2,000 years. When to visit Jiuquan?

Enjoying a continental desert climate in temperate zone, Jiuquan is dry and seldom rainy throughout the year. The winter is chilly and summer is hot, the spring is arid. Wind blowing with sands often happens in spring and autumn. Temperature difference varies greatly during a day. It has slim rainfall during the whole year, mainly falling during July to October.  May to October is the best season to visit.


How to get to Jiuquan?

Jiuquan Dingxin Airport is located in Dingxin Town of Jinta County, operating three flights a week to and from Beijing. Jiuquan Bus Station offers buses in the morning to the airport. Furthermore, the Jiayuguan Airport is only 27 kilometers from downtown area of Jiuquan. 

It has opened flights to and from Beijing, Xian, Lanzhou, Urumqi and Dunhuang. It is half hour's drive from Jiayuguan to Jiuquan and about six hours' drive to Dunhuang. Additionally, Dunhuang Airport is another important airport in this area.
Jiuquan Bus Station is located in No. 47, Xiguan Road, Suzhou District. There are several buses daily to Dunhuang, Zhangye and Wuwei. It is about four hours' drive to Zhangye and another three hours' drive to Wuwei.
