Dajiu Lake is located in Dajiuhu National Wetland Park, southeast Shennongjia Natural Conservation Region of Hubei province.Dajiuhu National Wetland Park is the largest and highest wetland in central China. It is surrounded by mountains and a total of nine different lakes are connected by a flowing stream. The nine lakes compose the Dajiu Lake, which means “nine big lakes” in Chinese.
The Dajiu Lake National Wetland Park is located at the junction of Sichuan, Chongqing and Hubei. It borders Wushan and Wuxi counties of Chongqing in the west, Zhushan and Fangxian of Shiyan City in Hubei in the north, and Badong County in the east. The wetland park saddles at the junction of six counties in three provinces.
The elevation of the wetland park is 1,730 meters above the sea level. Surrounded by mountains, it is a unique basin in the mountains, for unique natural landscape of the basin and mountains with natural forest resources and wetland plants resources.
It is the only inland sub-tropical forest ecosystem in the mid-latitude region in the northern hemisphere. The Shennongjia Dajiu Lake wetlands are more diversified than any other wetlands. Amid the park’s unique and diversified environment, precious and rare animals such as golden-haired monkey, white crane and golden eagles live and multiply in the reserve. And also due to unique environment, relict plants such as Davidia involucrate Baill, Liriodendron chinense and Cercidiphyllum japonicum could have survived the destructive ice ages and can still live and regenerate in this reserve.
In September 2006, with approval by the State Forestry Administration, the wetland park became the 4th national wetland park in the country and the only one in central China. The planned area of this park is 5,083 hectares. In June 2010, it was upgraded to a provincial-level nature reserve, with an area of 9,320 hectares under protection. In 2013, it was officially included in the catalog of wetlands of international importance.
