Kunming Transportation


With convenient transport links in and out of the city, Kunming welcomes and sees off tens of thousands of visitors every day. As southwest China’s transportation hub, the city plays a significant role for connecting Southeast Asia and China. The city also provides links to many popular destinations elsewhere in Yunnan such as Dali, Lijiang, and Shangri-La.

Kunming Changshui International Airport 

(IATA: KMG, ICAO: ZPPP) is the primary airport serving Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province, China. The airport is located 24.5 km (15.2 mi) northeast of the city center in a graded mountainous area about 2,100 m above sea level. The airport opened on June 28, 2012, replacing the old Kunming Wujiaba International Airport, which will be demolished. By Train

Kunming is the railway hub station composed of 12 main lines and branches as an important node of national railway network and the focus of Yunnan railway artery. The main lines are: Shanghai-Kunming Railway, Chengdu-Kunming Railway, Nanning-Kunming railway, Neijiang-Kunming Railway, Kunming-Lijiang railway, Kunming-Hekou Railway and so on. Shanghai-Kunming passenger rail line, Beijing-Kunming passenger rail line, Kunming-Bangkok high-speed rail, Yun-Gui express railway, Chengdu-Kunming express railway and the railway around Dianchi Lake are all under construction. 

Kunming Railway StationKunming Railway Station is located in the southern section of Beijing Road, Guandu District and its Postcode is 650000. Kunming Station has 6 platforms and 12 tracks. 
Kunming Railway Station whose maximum passenger assembling is up to about 10,000 is currently the largest railway station in the southwest region. The waiting hall in Kunming station is bright and spacious with a pleasing and comfortable environment. Escalators are availableb both at the waiting rooms and from platforms. In Kunming Station, there are totally more than 10 daily trains which go to Beijing, Chengdu, Shanghai, Chongqing, Xiamen, Zhengzhou, Nanning, Nanchang, Xi'an, Guangzhou, Wuhan, Guiyang, Changsha, Hangzhou and so on.



Getting Around

Subway
Seven subway lines will be built in Kunming City which will connect the major passenger distribution centers around the city. Presently, three lines, Line 1, first phase of Line 2 and 6 are in operation and Line 1 (Chenggong Branch), second phase of Line 2 and 6 are under construction. Now, Line 1 and 2 are used as one, with traveling time from North Coach Station to University Town South around 73 minutes. Passengers can also take subway line 6 to travel between the East Bus Station and the Kunming Airport.

City-bus
There are more than 100 bus lines covering almost every area in the city. It costs only 1 Yuan to take a public bus throughout Kunming. The last shift usually leaves 22:00 to 22:30. Passengers should get on a bus from the front door and get off from the back door. Today most buses are self-service; correct small change is required.

Tip: Stand close to the door to get off at the next stop, otherwise, the bus driver does not stop.

Taxi
Taking a taxi is convenient. The fare for Santana is 8 Yuan for the first three kilometers (about 1.9 miles) and 1.8 Yuan for each additional kilometer. After 22:00, the flag-down-rate increases to 9.6 Yuan and 2.7 Yuan for every additional kilometer (about 0.6 miles). The flag-down-rate of a mini taxi is 7 Yuan for the first three kilometers (about 1.9 miles) and 1.6 Yuan for every kilometer (about 0.6 miles) thereafter. Note: inside each taxi is a distinctive animal image that identifies taxi ownership. Keep the image in mind in case you leave something behind.

Car Rental
Confident visitors can rent a car. We suggest visitors collect full information before deciding to rent a car. Rental prices range from 120 yuan to 300 yuan for a four-seat vehicle. We suggest renting a car with a driver who can also serve as tour guide; in addition you will save on your deposit, which is 500 to1000 Yuan for one car with a driver, but at least 5000 yuan deposit for a vehicle without a driver.

Important notice: Foreigners must have a Chinese driver's license. We suggest visitors rent a car with a local driver to avoid going crooked road.

Bicycle
Renting a bicycle is another option. Many hostels in Kunming offer bicycle rentals at about 2 Yuan per hour and 15 Yuan for a day. The deposit for an old bike is 200 Yuan, 400 Yuan for a new one. Cycling around the city is gaining in popularity since the city is not big; travel by bicycle is convenient, economical and good for the environment. Visitors are reminded to secure bikes when parking them
