History of Taiyuan

As the capital of Shanxi Province, the history of Taiyuan could be traced back 2,500 years ago with its emergence during the Spring and Autumn Period. Taiiyuan was named Jinyang or Bing for short during ancient times.
Taiyuan played an important role in terms of Chinese history. It was once a prefecture in Qing Period, a state in the Western Han. During the five Dynasties, Taiyuan was the capital of Later Tang, Later Jin, Later Han and Northern Han. Taiyuan functioned as the producer of coal that supported the rapid industrial growth.
With over 2000 years of history, the city has enjoyed a reputation as a military fortress of Northern China because of the mountains and rivers that shielded the area. In addition, the ancient city was always referred to as the 'Dragon City' because it was the birthplace of many emperors.

Taiyuan city also has a wealth of attractions and notably among these is the Jinci Temple. This is the city's most attractive temple although the Shuangta Si (Twin-Pagoda Temple) has become a symbol of the city on account of its unique architecture. Another major attraction is the Tianlong Shan Stone Caves where magnificent sculptures dating from the Tang Dynasty (618-907) may be seen.

Shanxi Taiyuan International Folk Arts Festival
Initiated in 1991, the festival is held annually in September, and every other year in Taiyuan. Groups from Russia, Korea, Japan, Singapore and Inner Mongolia attend the festival and perform for audiences. Within the festival, an exhibition of fine arts, painting, paper-cutting, sculpture, drama, acrobatic and the culture of costume will open your eyes to a wealth of international folk culture.

Taiyuan enjoys a continental climate with the annual average temperature is 9.3℃. Winter here is cold and summer is sweltering dry. The best time to visit Tayuan is between May and October. Since Taiyuan is also a mining city, it is also woth taking along something to clean your face.
