Dali City

Yunnan Map.jpgDali City is situated between Erhai Lake and Cangshan Mountain range in southwest China's Yunnan Province. The charming town of Dali still retains a historical atmosphere, which served as the capital of Nanzhao and Dali Kingdoms from 8th to 13th century. It was also a very important gateway for promoting cultural and trade relations between China and Southeast Asian countries. Dali is home to Bai people. Most Bai people’s houses have courtyards with natural running water and bonsai (potted landscape) on display. Dali is a nice stopover for tourists to head for Lijiang. Major attractions include Mount Cangshan (cable car), Erhai Lake, ancient architectures and colorful cultural heritage of Bai people like the Three Pagodas, Bai's batik.

Administrative Division: Dali's newly finished administrative district that houses the newly opened Dali International Convention Center is in Longshan District. The Dali government's urban planning keeps its old and new districts separate, so those coming here for the first time often feel they have entered a time tunnel.

History of Dali

Dali is one of the birthplaces of the earliest culture in Yunnan. According to the record, in the 4th century, Bai ancestors lived here and a lot of clan and tribe scattered here, and they created the splendid Neolithic culture. In Qin and Han dynasties, Dali is the only way that must be passed on the "Shu-Hindu Road" (the road lead from Chengdu city Sichuan province, the Dali city Baoshan city in Yunnan province into Myanmar, and then to India), is transfer station of "southern silk road" from Sichuan to India. In Kingdom of Shu-Han in Zhuge Liang’s Southern Campaign there was established Yunnan Prefecture in Dali, and in the Tang dynasty Kingdom of Nanzhao established capital here, in Song dynasty Dali kingdom established capital here. When to visit Dali?

Without a clear distinction between the four seasons, Dali weather fluctuates each season but with an annual mean temperature ranging from  54F (12C ) to 66F (19C). Its rainy season begins in June and lasts till October. The hottest days are in July with an average temperature of 72F (22C), while Dali climate in January is the coldest at around of 46F (8C).
