Day 2:  Datong City Tour
After breakafst, you will have a full day to visit Datong including Huayan Temple, Yungang Grottoes and the Nine Dragon Screen.

Appreciate the Yungang Grottoes which are known as one of the three major Grottoes in China. The construction of the caves was started under the auspices of the noted monk Tan Yao in 453 and took 50 years to complete. Yungang Grottoes has been on the World Cultural Heritage List in 2001.

Enjoy the Nine Dragon Screen which was originally a part of the gate to the mansion of Prince Zhu Gui, the 13th son of the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 AD). The 45 meters long by 8 meters high glazed-brick structure has nine dragons sculptured in relief in five colors. The nine dragons are vividly portrayed as if flying in the air. This Nine-Dragon Screen in Datong is the oldest and biggest one among all the existent Nine-Dragon Screenss in China.

Appreciate the Huayan Temple, the largest and most perfectly preserved temple of the Liao (916-1125) and Jin (1115-1234) dynasties in China. Located in the urban area of Datong, it is among the first batch of the Major Historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level.

Day 3: Datong-Hengshan Mountain-Wutai Mountain 

After breakfast, you are transferred to visit Hengshan Mountain and Wutai Mountain ( 5 hours drive).

Climb the Heng Mountain in Shanxi, one of the Five Great Mountains. Like the other mountains in China with strong Taoist presence, Heng Mountain has been considered a sacred mountain since the Zhou Dynasty （1046 BC-256 BC）. Due to its northern location, the mountain has made it impossible for pilgrimages by the Chinese to take place for much of its history.

Admire the Hanging Temple, the most outstanding Buddhist temple in China. Situated at the foot of the Hengshan Mountain, this monastery, seeming to cling half way up the cliff, is approached over a bridge and up a stone staircase that has been chiseled from the rock face. It is the only existing temple with the combination of three Chinese traditional religions: Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism. On December 2010, it was listed in the "Time" magazine as the world's top ten oddest and most dangerous buildings.

Have fun in the Mountain Wutaishan. It is one of China's four sacred Buddhist Mountains. The five peaks of Wutai Mountain represent the Buddha's crown, the five families of Buddha, the five wisdom lights, the five visceral organs, and the five elements. The northern peak reaches over 3,058 meters above sea level and is the tallest in northern China.

Day 4: Wutai Mountain
After breakfast, you will have a full day in Wutai Mountain.

Visit the Bodhisattva Summit Temple, the largest Lama monastery in Wutaishan area. Originally built in the period of 467-499 in Northern Wei Dynasty, it was said to be the ancient temple of Manjusri, a Bodhisattva who dwelled in the temple. In Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), it became to look dazzlingly brilliant and splendid as it is a royal palace with its glorious design and golden roof.

Visit the Shuxiang Temple. Originally built in the early years of the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317-420), it's famous for the statue of Manjusri in it. In its Manjusri Hall, there is a statue of the beast for riding for Bodhisattva Manjusri, which is the highest painted Manjusri's statue in all the monasteries in this town.

Appreciate the Tayuan Temple or the Great White Pagoda. As one of Wutai Mountain's most symbolic sights, it is best renowned for housing the Great White Pagoda. Located at the south of the Xiantong Temple, it was originally a pagoda yard of the Xiantong Temple and separated as an independent temple in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The White Pagoda which is actually a Sarira Stupa named after the Sanskrit word sarira meaning "Buddhist relic".

Day 5: Wutai Mount- Pingyao
After breakfast, you will visit Foguang Temple in Wutai Mountain before transferred to Pingyao Ancient City.

Enjoy the Foguang Temple. Its major hall, the Great East Hall built in 857 AD, is the third earliest preserved timber structure in China. It also contains another significant hall dating from 1137 called the Manjusri Hall. In addition, the second oldest existing pagoda in China, dating from the 6th century, is located in the temple grounds. Today it is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site and is undergoing restoration.

Day 6: Pingyao Ancient City
Today, you will have a full day to visit Pingyao Ancient City.

Wander in the Pingyao Ancient City, the so called Tortoise City. During the Qing Dynasty, Pingyao was a financial center of China. It is now renowned for its well-preserved ancient city wall, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Climb the Ancient City Wall of Pingyao, one of the four famous well-preserved ancient city walls in China. First built about 2,700 years ago, it was expanded in the Ming Dynasty. In 1988, it had been acclaimed as a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level.

Walk around the Ming and Qing Street, the main commercial street in Pingyao. It is also called "the South Street". This ancient street is 440 meters long, running from north to south down the center of the city, a variety of businesses are located along the street.

Stroll in the Former Residence of Lei Lvtai, a traditional private residence in Qing Dynasty (1616-1912) with a history of 180 odd years. Its owner is Lei Lvtai, the founder of the Rishengchang Exchange Shop which was the largest exchange shop in Qing Dynasty.

Appreciate the Rishengchang Exchange Shop, the biggest exchange shop in Qing Dynaty (1644-1911) and also the first draft bank in China's history. In the nineteenth century, at its peak, it controlled almost half of the Chinese economy and its branches were widespread throughout China's big urbans and capital, Beijing. And in some western and southeastern countries, Rishengchang also owned its branches and offices. Now, it's a museum and in 2006 was included on the List of monuments of the People's Republic of China.

Visit the Ancient Government Office, one of the rare existing well-preserved ancient government office in China. Located in the center of Pingyao, it was first built in the Northern Wei Dynasty (368-534), but the surviving one nowadays was built in 1346. In the County Government, there're many ancient buildings, including the hall, bell tower, grain storehouse, prisons and so on. What's more, it even has an imperial edict museum, the only one in China.

Day 7: Pingyao Ancient City
Today, you will have a full day to visit Pingyao Ancient City

Admire the Shuanglin Temple which was constructed 1400 years ago in the 6th century during the Northern Wei period. It's famous for its collection of over two thousand decorated clay statues dating from the 12th-19th centuries. The statues are distributed among 10 halls in three connected courtyards. They are indeed a valuable treasure in the field of art.

Have a look at the Wang Family Compound which is located 37 miles from Pingyao in Lingshi County. This historical and cultural relic was built by Wang Lingshi, the head of one of the four leading families of the period (1644-1911). Wang Family Compound has a distinctive architectural style and is regarded as China's civilian Forbidden City.

Enjoy the Zhangbi Old Fortress in Zhangbi Village. With an area of 0.12 square kilometers, it is a pocket-size city with the complete urban structure. As a relatively intact ancient pocket-size castle that sets functions of military, residing, manufacture and religion as one, it is a major national historical and cultural site in Shanxi Province. Here, you can see various cultural relics from different dynasties such as Xia Dynasty (21 Century BC-16 Century BC), Tang Dynasty (618-907), Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) and Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and so on.

Day 8: Pingyao-Taiyuan

After breakfast, transfer to Taiyuan City,capital of Shanxi Province. Visit Jinci Temple before transferred to Taiyuan Airport or railway station for departure to your next city.

Visit the Jinci Temple which was built in the Bei Wei Dynasty in memory of Shuyu, the second son of the Emperor Wuwang of West Zhou kindom. Built from 1023 to 1032 during the Song dynasty, the Saintly Mother's Hall is the most magnificent and oldest building in it. it's regarded as an important example of architectures in Song Dynasty.
