Covering an area of 130,000 square kilometers, Anhui Province boasts of abundant tourism resources, and is a top tourist attraction among many in the Southeast. Anhui is quite diverse topographically.It has a variety of landscapes. China’s two important rivers, the Yangtze River and the Huaihe River, flow eastward across the south and the north of the province respectively, dividing its area into three natural regions: the region to the north of the Huaihe River is a vast plain with loamy soil; the region between the Huaihe River and the Yangtze River is a hilly terrain with rivers stretching crisscross and terraces strewing at random; the region to the south of the Yangtze River is a mountainous area with Huangshan (or the Yellow Mountains) and Mt. Jiuhua, as the representatives for their splendid scenery.

Famous mountains in Anhui are Mt. Dabie, Mt. Huangshan, Mt. Jiuhua, and Mt. Tianzhu. Huangshan, with Lotus Flower Peak as its highest point, rises to a height of 1,873 meters above sea level.

The Yangtze River flows 416 kilometers across the south of Anhui; the Huaihe River flows 430 kilometers across the north of the province; the Xin’an River, the headwaters of the Qiantang River, flows 240 kilometers across the south of Anhui. The province also has a number of lakes along the tributaries of the Yangtze River; some are quite large, including Chao Lake, Longgan Lake and Nanyi Lake. With a total area of 800 square kilometers, Chaohu is one of the five greatest freshwater lakes in China.

Top Cultural Relic SItes in Anhui Province

In addition to the beautiful mountain scenery, the well-preserved ancient villages in the southern part are derived from the Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368 - 1911). The most impressive ones are in Xidi and Hongcun Ancient Villages in Yixian County near Mount Huangshan. It is really a sight worth seeing and a must for visitors who are keen to learn more about life during those years. Shexian County, reputed as Town of Arches, is also a must for each visitor who wants to experience fine examples of residential architecture from the Ming and Qing Dynasties and the unique Tangyue Memorial Archway.

Anhui spans many geographical and cultural regions. The northern, flatter parts of the province, along the Huai River and further north, are most akin to neighbouring provinces like Henan, Shandong and northern Jiangsu. In contrast, the southern, hilly parts of the province are more similar in culture and dialect to other southern, hilly provinces, like Zhejiang and Jiangxi.
