Due to its large span in latitude, Shaanxi has a variety of climates. Under the Köppen climate classification, the northern parts, including the Loess Plateau, have either a cold arid or cold semi-arid, with cold and very dry winters, dry springs and autumns, and hot summers. Shaanxi has a mean annual temperature of 6°-16°, increasing from north to south, and a mean annual precipitation less in the north than in the south: 340-600 mm in northern Shaanxi, 570-700 mm in the Guanzhong Plain and 800-1,210 mm in southern Shaanxi. The area known as Guanzhong is mostly semi-arid, though there are a few areas with a humid subtropical climate, with cool to cold winters, and hot, humid summers that often see early-season heatwaves. in autumn it rains continuously and in summer it is hot and rainy. 
The south of Shaanxi has relatively high average temperatures and has a semi-tropical climate: in winter it is warm; in summer and autumn it rains a lot, sometimes even has rainstorms. After October the precipitation stop rapidly and bring very nice weather with little rain or snow.

The temperature of Shaanxi gradually reduces from south to north. For a year, the average temperatures of Shanbei, Guanzhong and Shannan are 9℃, 13℃ and 15℃. Influenced by monsoon, it is cold in winter and hot in summer in Shaanxi. In the coldest January, the average temperatures of Shanbei, Guanzhong and Shannan are -7℃, -1℃, 2℃; while that of the hottest July are 23℃, 25℃, 26℃. In summer, Shaanxi has the most rainfall, following spring and autumn, covering a time span from April to December. July and August are the main rainy months.

The best time to travel in Shaanxi is spring (March, April and May) and autumn (September, October and December).
