Guangfu Ancient Town


Guangfu Ancient Town is located in the middle of Yongnian County, Hebei Province's Handan City, surrounded by a moat that’s 5 kilometers long. The 2600-year-old town is a key cultural site under provincial protection with relics like the ancient wall, Hongji Bridge, Mao Sui Tomb, Xiba Sluice and Cave to Hide Soldiers.

Guangfu Ancient Town is a water town which is surrounded by ten thousand mu low-lying lands and boundless reed plants, which gives it a water town scene that is rarely-seen in North China. Outside the town is a free flowing moat, and beyond that is the Yongnian low-lying land which covers an area of 460,000 mu, with water flowing from north to south and which used to be a famous farm of natural aquatic products.

The town is beyond comparison because it combines the features of an ancient town, water town and the birthplace of Tai chi. The former residences of Yang Luchan, founder of the Yang Style Tai chi and Wu Yuxiang, founder of Wu Style Tai chi are well-preserved here.

The grand wall of the ancient town is also in good condition, whose history can be traced back to Tang Dynasty, when it was made from clay, and in Ming Dynasty, people built brick walls and four barbicans. The square wall the 140-meter-wide moat were not very common in ancient town’s history.

The current 12-meter-tall and 8-meter-wide wall was rebuilt in Ming Dynasty and it encircles an area of 1.5 square kilometers. There are four barbicans and four gates, each gate is built with a tower, and there is a corner building on every corner. Outside the moat, you can see willows and four hanging bridges reaching the outside, thus making the town a strong fortress.
