Mong Kok


Mong Kok is a busy and vibrant area in Hong Kong, and is a great place to visit. It is conveniently located and easily accessible by the MTR. The area is a labyrinth of streets full of life. In the evenings due to crowds of locals and tourists, many streets become completely pedestrian, and visitors can see the hustle and bustle of this vibrant area. Thousands of people strolling along the streets and hundreds of neon lights enhance the beauty of Mong Kok, especially at night. By visiting the area, tourists will be tempted to try out on Chinese dishes and snacks. There are a lot of eatery locations, fast food corners and snack joints in different corners of the area.

Most people who have been in Mong Kok characterize it as an excellent place for shopping. If you love to shop, it is definitely one of the places that you will always be inclined to visit in Hong Kong. The area has a huge amount of shopping spots along the streets and shops on the first floors of the buildings where tourists and locals can purchase almost any item at a highly competitive price.


What to see?
Mong Kok has a number of shopping streets, open markets and shopping malls. Most of them are within a short walk from the Mongkok MTR station. Get out of the station through exit E2 and turn left. Walk a little and you are on the Sai Yeung Choi Street South. This street is a popular place to buy electronics, such as cell phones, photo and video accessories, laptops. Further to the east, parallel to the Sai Yeung Choi Street, is the Tung Choi Street. It is home to the most famous open market in Mong Kok, the Ladies Market. The market represents itself over 400 meters of street stalls between Argyle and Dundas Streets. Visitors can buy here women and men clothes, souvenirs, bags, some leather goods, toys, fake watches and so on at bargain prices. Most stalls sell more or less the same goods, but the price varies from a vendor to a vendor. Try your bargaining skills. The next parallel street is the Fa Yuen Street, which is full of shops selling sports clothes, shoes and sports equipment.

There are three thematic markets near the Prince Edward Road. Located just a few steps away from Royal Plaza Hotel, the Flower Market is a colorful street on the Flower Market Road. It contains several tens of shops selling a wide selections of flowers and houseplants. Mong Kok also boasts of the Bird Market, which attracts many tourists visiting Hong Kong. The market has a number of stalls with a wide variety of beautiful birds, especially songbirds. These birds are usually for sale to locals. Further to the west at a short distance away, almost at the junction of Nathan and Prince Edward Roads, on the Tung Choi Street is the Goldfish Market. It specialises on sale of aquarium fish, a forage and aquarium supplies. It has a wide variety of exotic fish, corals, turtles and other aquatic inhabitants of all shapes, sizes and colors.

Also, there are several shopping malls and centers in the area. Langham Place is a commercial complex which includes a hotel, a office tower and a shopping mall. The mall comprises around 200 retail outlets. The Mongkok Computer Centre on the Nelson Street (between Tung Choi Street and Fa Yuen Street) houses a large number of shops selling laptops, hardware, software and computer accessories.


How to get there?
The easiest way to get around the city is Hong Kong MTR. It is fast, inexpensive, with the convenient navigation in trains and on stations. There are several stations in the Mong Kok area. The Mongkok MTR station is located at the junction of the Argyle Street and the Nathan Road. It is only 3 MTR stops from Tsim Sha Tsui and 4 stops from Hong Kong Island. In the northern part is the Prince Edward MTR station. Both stations are part of the MTR Tsuen Wan and Kwun Tong Lines. Also, there is the Mong Kok East MTR station in the eastern part of the area.
