Festivals in Fenghuang


Miao people have a lots of  festivals which has large-scale activities in Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture of Hunan Province. Here lists major festivals in Fenghuang County as follows;
Miao Minority Sanyuesan Festival

Sanyuesan Festival is a local Miao festival. It is celebrated in spring, on March 3rd (the lunar calendar), and provides unmarried young people an opportunity to find their loved ones. On that day, young boys and girls from nearby settlements get together in bright and attractive clothing. They hold hands and sing songs, do bamboo pole dancing, and have their dates in houses that are shaped like boats. At the break of dawn, they give each other a token, and promise to meet again next year.
 

Miao Minority  Siyueba Festival
Siyueba Festival falls on the eighth day of the fourth lunar month in each year. The festival is held in memory of a Miao hero who sacrificed himself for Miao freedom in the past anti-ruler war. The local Miao people cerebrate it by singing songs and playing music instruments-Lusheng. Now it is not only a simple festival for the locals to remember the hero and the old stories, but also a good chance for young people to look for their girlfriend or boyfriend.


Miao Minority Liuyueliu Festival
Miao Minority Liuyueliu Festival falls on the 6th day of the lunar calendar in each year. it is a festival for the ancestors of the Miao people. According to the legend,  Tian Ling, when he was a  youn man , once shoot and killed the emperor in ancient times. And he was praised as a hero of the Miao Minority. This legend is popular in the area where the Miao people live in Fenghuang County.And it is completely consistent with the content of "Tianluo Xianggong" in "Miao Literature History". On this day, Miao people will gather under the Fenghuang Mountain, to blow whistles, sing and dance in order to worship martyrs and pray for good luck and happiness in the future.


Miao Minority Girl's Day
Miao Minority Girl's Day falls on the 8th day of the 4th lunar month. It embodies the profound respect of the Miao people towards females.On Girls' Day, married Miao girls would come back to their mothers' houses and the family hold a solemn ceremony to worship their ancestors and then have brown rice together.This day is also commemorated as a festival for young Miao people in love. They sing folk songs, blow leaves and play flutes as a way of displaying their fervent love. Young Miao boys will also play their trump card---playing two flutes at the same time...More

Miao Minority Jielong Dance Festival
Jielong Dance Festival, integrating traditional dance, customs and costume, shows graceful postures and clear vocalization, and displays the national costumes and silver ornaments of Miao women.Jielong Dance enjoys wide popularity in Huayuan County of western Hunan. It originates from the sacrificial custom passed down from generation to generation of Miao ethnic group, who regards Dragons as symbol of happiness and prosperity...More


Miao Minority Catching Autumn Festival
The Miao Minority Catching Aautumn Festival, also Ganqiu Festival,  is held on the day or after the day of the lunar calendar  to celebrate the harvest. At the same time, this is also a festival for young girls and boys of the Miao pople to show their talents. On the field of the Catching Aautumn Festival, there are stages of singing, druming, eight-person autumn dancing, etc.All of people can enjoy  themselves.
