Jiuyi Mountain Scenic Area


 

Jiuyi Mountain Scenic Area is located in the southern part of Ningyuan County, Yongzhou City.  Mount Jiuyi is a national AAAA scenic area. Occupying 200 square kilometers, Jiuyi Mountain Scenic Area is a habitat of many rare plants and wild animals including the unique Jiuyi spot bamboo. The mountain is called Jiuyi because there are nine (Jiu in Chinese) peaks.

Legend & History
The story tells of one of the five great emperors in Chinese prehistoric times, Shun the Great, and his two concubines. On hearing about his death in the Cangwu Mountain (this was the old name for Jiuyi Mountain), the two concubines went there but failed to find their husband. They missed the way because the nine peaks all look so alike. Nowadays, the central peak is called Shunyuan Peak and the two elegant peaks around it are said to be the two women. 

What to see ?
Mausoleum of Emperor Shun, standing on the mountain, is a key cultural relic under state-level protection and one of the ten most famous cultural heritage sites in Hunan Province. The mausoleum was originally built in Xia Dynasty (about four thousand years ago) and it is the earlist recorded tomb of the Chinese people's ancestors. Historically, the mausoleum was a place for emperors and kings from various periods in ancientChina to pay their respects to the Emperor Shun, one of the five earliest emperors of China. Since 2,000, cultural tourist festivals and sacrificial ceremonies have been held every year and attract a great many tourists. 
 
Other 37 scenic spots in the area include the Garden of Cuckoo, the Garden of Spot Bamboo, Yongfu Temple, Zixia Rock and Yuguan Rock, all of which are memorable sites and of great interest to visitors.Jiuyi Mountain consists of nine peaks. It is charming and attractive not only for the unique natural scenery, but also for a vivid legend.
