Hanguguan Pass


Hanguguan Pass was first established during the Spring and Autumn Period (770BC-476BC), Hangu Pass once played an great role in history as a pass of vital importance between ancient Luoyang and Chang'an (Xi'an). This grand building complex is 15 kilometers (9 miles) north of Lingbao City. If one man guards the pass, ten thousand are unable to pass through.
Additionally, Taichu Palace in the building complex is said to be the place where Lao Zi, the founder of Taoism, created his greatest masterpiece Daodejing (Tao Te Ching), commonly translated as the 'Classic of the Virtue'. So, Hangu Pass is also an important site for Lao Zi's believers to commemorate him.

Hangu Pass tourist area is 12 kilometers from Lingbao, Henan province. Covering an area of 16.9 square kilometers, the tourist area is rich in Taoism and military culture.

Hangu Pass is one of the earliest fortresses in Chinese history, and it is also the holy land where Lao-tzu, the great ancient Chinese philosopher and founder of Taoism, wrote the Tao Te Ching, the masterpiece of Taoism. The area has become very famous in China and abroad.

The tourist area is divided into Hangu Pass and Taichu Palace. Built in the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC) and Warring States Period (475-221 BC), Hangu Pass got its name because of its strategic geographical location. It has witnessed numerous battles from ancient to modern times.

Taichu Palace is the place where Lao-tzu wrote the Tao Te Ching. As a treasure of world culture, the great work contains extensive knowledge and profound insights, covering politics, economics, military affairs, arts and other aspects.

Hangu Pass has celebrated the birth of Lao-tzu every year since 1992, welcoming tourists from all over the world as they visit the site. The area has about 20 scenic spots for tourists to visit.

 Hangu Pass Tourism Zone is a national AAAA scenic spot with an area of 16.5 square kilometers , where Henan province,Shaanxi province and Shanxi province meet each other. Main places of interest, altogether more than 20 spots, includes Taichu Palace, Daosheng Palace, the Taoist health-preserving park, the building for settling classics, Zhanzi Pavilion, Jiming Pavilion, Beilin(a large collection of ancient stone tablets), the waxwork museum, the museum, Guan Lou (a pavilion used to look into distance to inspect situation, usually located at the entrance of a pass), the ancient roads of Hangu Pass and so on.
