Juyan Lake

Juyan Lake is located on the northern edge of the Badain Jaran Desert in the northern part of the Alxa League in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. It is the tail lake of Heihe River, the second largest inland river in China.

Heihe River, which originated in the Qilian Mountains, flows through the three provinces of Qinghai, Gansu, and Inner Mongolia for more than 800 kilometers, and then flows into two Gobi depressions on the northwestern margin of the Badain Jaran Desert, forming two large lakes in the east and west which are called Juyan Lake.

Juyan Lake is a peculiar migration lake. Its location changes suddenly from east to west, from south to north, from large to small, and changes from time to time. The east Juyan lake once dried up before 1992. Since this century, the Chinese government has attached great importance to the ecological environment. On July 17, 2002, water of Heihe River flowed into the east Juyan Lake for the first time. On September 24, 2003, it first flowed into the west Juyan Lake which had dried up for 42 years. Now, the water area of Juyan Lake has reached 66.3 square kilometers, which ecology is showing signs of improving.

The distance between the east lake and the west lake is about 35 kilometers.  With an average water depth of 1.5 meters, the lake is rippling.  On the lake,  the reeds are clustered. There are some kinds of fish in the lake. And some kinds of birds usually get there for perching. Thanks to environmental protection efforts, Juyan Lake has turned into a sight of crystal clear. Nowadays, Juyan lake has been opened  as  a tourist attraction to public.
