Hohhot Transportation


Hohhot City,the capital of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, is the political, economic, and cultural center of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. With convenient transportation,  Hohhot is an important bridge connecting the Yellow River Economic Belt, the Asia-Europe Continental Bridge, and the Bohai Rim Economic Region. It is also an important central city along the border that China opens to Mongolia and Russia.

By Air
Hohhot Baita International Airport is the largest air transport hub in Inner Mongolia, with airlines radiating to almost all the provincial capitals and small-to-medium cities in China. The airport was first built in 1958 and has been expanded several times. Presently 31 airlines are operating international and domestic flights here with over 130 air routes, connecting with many cities/areas such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Changchun, Xi'an, Haikou, Hong Kong, Taipei and Taichung.
The airport is located to the east of Hohhot, about 14 kilometers from the urban area. It is 30 minutes to the airport from Hohhot.

By Train
Hohhot East Eailway StationHohhot has an extensive railway network, connecting with Beijing, and Hailar to the east; Baotou, Xi'an, Lanzhou, and Yinchuan to the west; Shanghai, Nanjing and Ningbo to the southeast, plus international trains to Ulan Bator and Moscow.


The Beijing-Baotou Railway and the Jining-Baotou double-track railway have stations in Hohhot, and almost all Chinese cities can be reached by train from the city. There are also international trains heading for Ulan Bator every Wednesday and Thursday. Travelers can reach Frankfurt in Germany by boarding a train in Hohhot. The city has two railway stations, Hohhot Railway Station and Hohhot East Railway Station.

The Hohhot-Zhangjiakou High-Speed line that is to be constructed will be a double-track electrification railway. Its overall length is planned to be 286 kilometers with a speed of 250 kilometers per hour. It is expected to be completed in 2017 and will be an important east-west line in North China.

By Highways
There are highways linking Hohhot with its counties and dozens of coaches are scheduled to the nearby towns each day. Moreover, six routes to the border provinces and regions in Mongolia and Russia are accessible. The around-the-city expressway (Sanhuan Road) was built in Hohhot in December 2008. It leads directly to Hohhot's neighboring cities, and also the cities of Yinchuan and Lanzhou in other provinces. It takes around five hours to drive from Beijing to Hohhot.

By Metro
Hohhot Metro is planned to have 5 lines according to the preliminary plan, while metro line 1 & line 2 will operate in 2019 and 2020. These metro lines will go through the important transportation hubs, including East Railway Station, Hohhot Railway Station, Wanda Plaza and Xinhua Square, which will make a great contribution to the passenger transportation in the city.


By City-bus
Currently, there are about 60 bus lines opened in Hohhot City, which can reach to the city's every corner. Most of them have no conductor, so you are required to prepare CNY1 before getting on. On the other hand, the mini buses with conductors often charge by distance, costing around CNY1.5.

By Taxi
Taxis in the city provide 24 hours' service at reasonable prices. During the day, the flag-down rate is CNY8 for the first 2 kilometers and CNY1.5 for one kilometer thereafter. CNY1 fuel fee is charged for each ride. When the car runs more than 10 kilometers or travels in the nighttime between 21:00 and 06:00 the next day, the cost of each kilometer increases to CNY2. For every 5 minutes’ waiting, the taximeter automatically charges CNY1.5. During the peak hours of 07:00 – 09:00 and 17:00 – 19:00, the waiting fee is CNY2 for every 5 minutes.
