Jishou University, founded in September 1958, is located in Jishou City, the capital of Xiangxi Autonomous Prefecture, Hunan Province. As a comprehensive university in Hunan Province and the only comprehensive in Wuling Mountainous Area, Jishou University is jointly established by the National Ethnic Affairs Commission and the Hunan Provincial People's Government.. In 2018, it was approved as a national doctoral degree authorized unit, 

Jishou University has the qualifications of recruiting foreign students. It has cooperated with more than 20 universities in the United States, Britain, South Korea, Ukraine, Sweden, India, Japan. International academic exchanges such as going abroad for study, attending academic conferences, and holding international conferences are frequent. Students can choose to travel to the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom to exchange and learn. The university's  minority art group has been invited by the United States and other countries to show performance and it has a wide range of influences.

Jishou University Zhangjiajie Campus was established in October 2002. The predecessor of the campus was originally Wuling University which was founded in 1985. Wuling University was renamed Wuling College in 1995.  it was incorporated into Jishou University to establish Jishou University Zhangjiajie Campus in 2002,
