History of Yueyang
The area now called Yueyang has been inhabited for over 3,000 years. It was originally established as a prefecture called Hanchang in 210 AD during the Three Kingdoms period.

Under the Song Dynasty (AD 960-AD 1279) it was heavily fortified, with walls 4 miles (6.4 km) in circumference, and became the seat of the military prefecture of Yueyang, whence its present name. During the Taiping Rebellion, its capture by the rebels in AD 1852 was an important stage in their advance up the Yangtze River valley to Nanjing. At the time of the foundation of the Republic of China in AD 1911, it became a county, taking the name Yueyang.

Yueyang City is most famous attractions are the Yueyang Tower and Dongting Lake. Yueyang's real charm rests with human cultural relics as well as the natural landscape. The well-known Yueyang Tower is one of the three famous pavilions in South China. China's second largest freshwater lake Dongting Lake is a good tourist destination. Yueyang is a burgeoning industrial city: The Petroleum and Chemical Industry is flourishing, which makes the city the biggest petroleum and chemical base in the mid-south area of China; paper-making, the textile industry and the machine industry are also well developed. The city boasts of Dongting Ramie Textile Printing and a Dyeing Mill which is the biggest in Asia with the textiles being sold to the countries in Southeast Asia and the Occident.
When to visit yueyang? 
Yueyang has a northern subtropical monsoon climate with the features of long warm period in spring and winter, short freeze-up in early winter, and mild weather in autumn and summer, because it is located between 112°-114° east longitude and 28°- 29°north latitude in the northeast of Hunan Province.
There are four distinct seasons with sunlight of 1848 hours and the average temperature is 17.9C (about 63F). The annual average rainfall reaches 2110.2 millimeter and the rich rainfall brings great benefit to agriculture and industry. For tourists May to October is the best period to visit Yueyang, because at this time of year the water lily is in full blossom and varied tourism festivals are organized, which have great charm to tourists.

How to get to Yueyang?
By Air: Yueyang Sanhe Airport , 18 km away from downtown Yueyang, is an airport being constructed to serve the city of Yueyang in Hunan Province.
Visitors can reach Changsha Huanghua International Airport which is only 130 kilometers (80.78 miles) from Yueyang and takes about one hour's ride on the high-speed motorway to the city. The high-speed motorway system for road transportation has been long established in Yueyang and radiates in all directions. Transportation by water is also convenient because the city is the only port in Hunan Province which is beside the Yangtze River.

By Train: Yueyang Railway Station is located at no. 9, Zhanqian Road, and East Railway Station is in the east end of East Baling Road. The latter operates high speed trains.

By Bus: Three bus stations operate long-distance buses to the surrounding areas, including Yueyang Bus Station, Dongting Bus Station and Lianyun Bus Station.
