Fujian History


Fujian has a long history. The “Ba Min” culture was glorious in ancient times. Since five thousand years ago, the ancestors had been living here for generations, and creating Tanshishan Culture which was comparable with Yangshao Culture and Hemudu Culture.

In the Mid-Tang Dynasty, the authority set five states here, namely Fu, Jian, Quan, Zhang and Ting. This is where the name “Fujian” comes. During the Five Dynasties, the king of Min, Wang Shenzhi basically set up the Fujian provincial boundary.

During the Three Kingdoms, Fujian greatly developed the ship-building and navigation technology. Till the Southern Song Dynasty and Yuan Dynasty, Quanzhou had become one of the biggest commercial ports in the world and built trade relations with more than one hundred countries and areas. This is the famous Maritime Silk Road.

In Ming dynasty, Zheng He realized seven times of naval expeditions. For several times, he chose Fujian ports as starting and anchoring point. In late Qing Dynasty, Mawei Navy Yard and Fujian Ship Administration School were founded in Mawei, where became the cradle of navy and ship-building industry in Modern China.

There are many talents and scholars in Fujian history, like Su Song the astronomer, Liu Yong, the literary intellectual, Zheng Qiao the historian, Zheng Chenggong and Lin Zexu the national hero, Yan Fu the ideologist and translator, Tan Kah Kee the patriotic overseas Chinese leader and Chen JingRun the famous mathematician.

Fujian is also a famous old revolutionary base area. As one of national major provinces for old revolutionary area, it is covering 62 cities and counties. Among them, Gutian town in Shanghang county, Longyan city is the most well-known because of the famous saying “Gutian Conference Spirit is Everlasting”.

With its long history,Fujian created a series of boutique culture like the splendid “Marine Silk Road” culture, the root-sharing Fujian-Taiwan culture, the long standing Hakka Culture, the leisure and relaxing hot spring culture, the well-known tea culture, and classic Red Culture. Nevertheless, there are also some special and outstanding regional cultures like Hui’an women culture, Puxian Opera culture and Shaxian Delicacies.
