Shandong Weather


Shandong has a warm-temperate monsoonal climate. It has hot summers with centralized rainfall as well as short springs and autumns with an average annual temperature ranging from 11ºC to 14ºC. The temperature diversifies more dramatic from east to west than from the south to north.

With an average annual rainfall ranging from 550mm to 950mm, the rainfall reduces from the southeast to northwest. Shandong province has abundant sunshine with an average ranging from 2300 to 2890 hours annually; the sunshine can afford the need of sowing seeds twice per year. Because 60% rainfall centralized in summer, it is easy to come to waterlog in summer and drought in winter and spring. It is most influential for agriculture.

Best Time to Visit Shandong
Based on Shandong climate, spring, summer and autumn are the best time to visit Shandong, especially from May to October. In spring and autumn, there are beautiful flowers and the temperature is comfortable. In summer days, you can enjoy beach fun in coastal areas. The winter in Shandong is cold without outstanding scenery.

Shandong Climate by seasons

In Spring(Mar-May)
China Shandong weather in spring is changeable. The temperature increases quickly and the wind blows in from the southwest inland, thus it is dry due to fast evaporation but few rains. Sometimes the coldness would rival the warmth for a few days. And the sandstorms are more likely to occur. Baotu Spring Park and Thousand-Buddha Mountain in Jinan, Mount Laoshan in Qingdao, Liugong Island in Weihai, Penglai Pavilion Scenic Area in Yantai, etc. are all scenic sites for spring outings.

In Summer (Jun-Aug)
Shandong summer is hot the same as the other regions in China, and July is the hottest month as the temperature goes up to 32℃ (90℉) at average. For the coastal areas in the eastern and southern parts, the hottest time may be in August. Around 60%-70% rainfalls of the year occur in summer, which might cause floods along rivers and lakes. A few typhoons may hit Shandong in the season, too. You can enjoy the lotus flowers at Weishan Lake or Baotu Spring Park, escape from summer heat in Taishan Mountain or Mt. Laoshan. Coastal areas are the best destinations for beach fun in summer, including Qingdao, Weihai and Yantai. In Qingdao, you can also attend the Beer Festival for fun.

In Autumn (Sep-Nov)
When it comes to autumn, the temperature drops and the rainfall decreases. Shandong China weather at this time of the year is very pleasant and fresh. Gales attack the region occasionally, sometimes there’re continuous light rains. Paying attention to the Shandong weather forecast, so you can dress properly. For the attractions, visit worthy historical sites include Confucius Temple, Confucius Family Mansion & Cemetery in Qufu, and Tai’er Zhuang Ancient Town in Zaozhuang. Popular natural autumn destinations include Taishan Mountain, Mt. Laoshan, Red Leaves Valley, Gingko Forest in Linyi, Daming Lake Park, wetlands of Yellow River Estuary, etc.

In Winter (Dec-Feb)
Prevailing north wind take cold air to Shandong in winter, thus Shandong weather during the time is dry and cold. The inland has the lower temperature than costal area, and the lowest temperature is around -4℃ (25℉). For the west land is higher than the east, the winter monsoon from the northwest is weakened. Even so, the winter days are still cold, just a little warmer than other provinces on the same latitude. Baotu Spring at 18℃ (64℉) all year around, and snow scenery on Taishan Mountain are the most famous winter landscapes in Shandong. You may also visit the historical sites there.
