History of Shenzhen
Shenzhen, also known as Peng Cheng, literally meaning the deep ditch, is one of the first and most successful Special Economic Zones in China. It is conventionally believed that before the reform and opening up policy was carried out in 1979, Shenzhen was a remote and desolated small town and a frontier fishing village. However, contrary to this popular belief, Shenzhen indeed has a long history.

In accordance with A Dictionary of Official Titles in Imperial China, Independent Battalion refers to a military unit of approximate 1000 men organized like a normal Battalion under a Battalion Commander, but directly subordinate to a Regional Military Commission rather than part of Guard.

How to get to Shenzhen?

By Air
Located 32 kilometres away from the downtown, Shenzhen Baoan International Airport covers an area of 2718 acres. The airport is the first among China modern international air harbour with combined transport by sea, air and rail. As the fourth largest air harbours in China, Shenzhen Baoan International Airport is one of the busiest airports around China and one of the most important bases in Pearl River Delta. So far, there are more than 110 domestic airlines and 14 international airlines, with many flights between Shenzhen and some European and US cities.
By Train
Shenzhen has a developed and sophisticated railway network. Trains bound for Beijing, Shanghai, Changsha, Fuzhou, Guilin, Jiujiang, Wuchang, Yueyuang, Zhengzhou, Changde, Xi’an, Shenyang, Shantou and any other cities are available here.
Shenzhen possesses five railway stations: Shenzhen Railway Station, Shenzhen North Station, Shenzhen West Station, Shenzhen Futian Station and Shenzhen East Station. Shenzhen Railway Station is directly connected with the major cities along the way and has 12 pairs of trains to Hong Kong. Every day, almost 50 pairs of trains depart from here. Shenzhen North Station is the hub of high-speed rails of Shenzhen city as well as the pivot of passenger rail transport of Southern China.
The main railway lines include Guangzhou-Shenzhen, Beijing-Kowloon, Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong high-speed rails, and Xiamen-Shenzhen.
Besides, Beijing-Guangzhou rails and Beijing-Kowloon rails cross one another in Shenzhen.
By Bus
The city is blessed with 7 passenger depots with the routes stretching over such major cities of Mainland China as Guangzhou, Dongguan, Huizhou and Special Administrative Regions (SARs) of Hong Kong and Macau.  Every day, more than 150 air-conditioned large-sized buses are running from Guangzhou to Shenzhen. Moreover, shuttle buses come to and fro between Hong Kong and Shenzhen 300 times each day.


When to visit Shenzhen?
Situated at about the Tropic of Cancer, Shenzhen falls within subtropical monsoon climate with its own distinctive features: abundant rainfall, sufficient sunlight and rare frost. Due to this pleasant weather, it is possible to visit the city all the year round.
The coldest month here is January, with the average temperature of 15.4℃ (59.72°F), so you will not feel freezing here even in the winter. Moreover, you had better bring raincoats or umbrella with you if you are to visit Shenzhen in April when rain begins to pour down. And the hottest month is July, with the average temperature of 28.8℃ (83.84°F). Although typhoon frequently comes from July to September, Shenzhen is hit once a year at most because typhoon is obstructed by mountains there.
