Foshan is a historical and cultural city, located in the center of Guangdong province. It has been the center of the southern school of Chinese wushu, and maintains the titles of Hometown of Martial Art. As one of the four famous towns, Foshan has rich historical and cultural heritage. More over, it is the cardle for Guangzhou opera (Yue opera). Foshan is a modern city. It was one of the earliest ports to engage in foreign trade since China's open door policy. It also has become the third largest city in Guangdong Province, combining its manufacturing industries with tourism. History of Foshan
With a long history dating back to approximately 5,000 years, the city gained its name from the three Buddha statues unearthed in this area in the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Having a temperate climate with abundant rainfall, it has been a land of fish and rice. Besides fishing and farming, the local craftsmen were also known for their skills in making ceramics. Thriving handicraft industries, commerce, and the arts made Foshan one of the four most famous towns in Tang and Song (960-1279) dynasties. It has a reputation as the home of Chinese ceramic arts, Cantonese operas and martial arts.

When to visit Foshan?
Located in the central-southern region of Guangdong Province, Foshan has a humid, subtropical monsoon climate with temperate weather and high rainfall. Owing to its location at low altitude and adjacent to the South Sea, the average annual temperature is 22.1C. Spring and autumn are the golden seasons to visit that place. Every year from March to October, visitors can go rafting at Jiu Dao Gu. Also of interest is the Autumn Color Art, a type of folk art with an autumn harvest theme. A series of activities and ceremonies are held in autumn to celebrate the local autumn scenes. During this period, people enjoy attending diverse folk art competitions, performances, and folk music concerts.

How to get to Foshan?
Foshan is located in the northern part of the Pearl River, 20 kilometers from Guangzhou. The transportation system of the city is well designed to facilitate traveling into or out of the city.
By Air: Foshan Shadi Airport was built to reduce the air traffic pressure on Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport. It stopped civilian flights in 2002 and reopened from November 2009. Now, it has flights to Beijing and Wuxi. 
By Train: Foshan Railway Station is located at No.1, Wenchang Road. The city is connected with the national railway network via the Guangzhou-Zhanjiang Railway. Several trains stop here on their way to many large and medium sized cities such as Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Kunming, Chongqing and Nanning.
Each day, about 80 pairs of high speed trains run between Guangzhou and Foshan. A second class ticket costs CNY 12. The whole journey only takes around 20 minutes.
The train Z804 departs from Hong Kong Hung Hom at 10:52 and arrives at the city about 13:50 every day. While, the train Z806 leaves at about 16:10 and arrives at Hung Hom Station, Hong Kong at about 18:31. The train fare is HKD230 / adult and HKD115 / child. After September of 2018, Hong Kong will be connected with the mainland China by bullet train. By then, passengers can travel by Hong Kong - Foshan high speed train with a transfer in Guangzhou or Shenzhen.
Since the sixth large scale speedup of the national railway system, passengers to Sanya do not need to transfer from Guangzhou any more. Two trains a day from Beijing and Changchun to Sanya  make a stop here.
With the operation of Guangzhou-Zhuhai Intercity High Speed Train (known as the Guangzhu Intercity MRT), linking Guangzhou South Railway Station and Zhuhai Station, the duration by train from Guangzhou to Shunde District is reduced to 8 minutes. There are 5 main stations in the Shunde District along the Guangzhu Intercity MRT – Bijiang, Beijiao, Shunde, Shunde College and Ronggui. Each day around 60 bullet trains run between Guangzhou South and Shunde. The ticket price is CNY 15 for the first class seat and CNY 10 for the second class seat. 
By Bus: There are 16 long-distance bus stations in the city, mainly including City Long-distance Bus Station, Zumiao Long-distance Bus Station, Oriental Square Long-distance Bus Station and Shunde Long-distance Bus Station.
Hongyun Long-distance Bus Station
This station is the main terminal for bus service. It operates inter-province lines to many cities in Hunan, Jiangxi, Hainan, Fujian, Zhejiang, and Henan provinces. Bus lines to most cities in Guangdong Province are also available. Buses to Guangzhou, Dongguan, Zhuhai and Shenzhen depart every 15 to 40 minutes.

Zumiao Long-distance Bus Station
Zumiao Long-distance Bus Station is one of the most importance long-distance bus stations. It mainly offers bus to Guangdong Provincial Bus Station next to Guangzhou Railway Station and Guangzhou Zhongshanba Lu Long-distance Bus Station.
